Synopsis

A capitular letter is an uppercase letter that starts the text of a chapter of a book and is colored and adorned with plant or geometrical motifs. The capitular letters in the scriptorium of the Monastery of San Millán de Suso are characterized by their braids, their characteristic colors -reds and yellows- and by the animal motifs in their decoration.

Every letter from our file can be used as an excuse to develop an overview of the activity in a medieval scriptorium in the area of San Millán. The calligraphy used is Beneventan miniscule from the eighth century.

The file is composed of handcrafted, environmentally friendly paper designed exclusively for Ediciones Emilianenses. Produced in one of the few workshops that make paper without contaminants, the paper is made of natural and recycled products from the area.
